Cruze Diesel!
Really, this is the best Cruze you can buy right now. 10 more horsepower and 100+ more torques over even the turbocharged 1.4L model.
But no manual, which I personally could live with.
The question is, though: This or a Jetta TDI? I'm inclined to choose the Jetta, but the only real way would be to drive both back-to-back.

Just about all the Cruzes I see on dealer lots have had their window stickers removed from the windows, which makes me think the stop sale is still in effect. If so, I'd avoid these for a while.

It's also the most expensive, by far. A Cruze Eco manual will run you ~20% cheaper with only 4 less MPG AND come with a manual.

Is it wrong I'd buy it for the power advantage rather than the economy?

No, it's not wrong at all, but it's a marginal power advantage at a huge cost.
$5000 can buy you a raised boost pressure, new exhaust manifold, and a HP tune for the 1.4 that will boost it well beyond what the Diesel does.
...or a Focus ST.

When the Focus ST stops looking like a fish, it'll be on my radar.

Depending on the torque curve an automatic could be quite irritating on a diesel. I know they're a little better on newer cars but my diesel serves you a lump of torque within a 2500 rev window then nothing anywhere else. I need the manual to keep it in the powerband properly.

$5000?
$200 will get you 160hp/210 ft-lb torque. Maybe spend another $220 for a catless down pipe for supposedly 8-10 more hp.

I chose the Jetta last year because wagen! Now that there is a "base" TDI Jetta it certainly makes for some interesting comparisons now. In any case the mileage numbers on the sticker are something you shouldn't even contemplate.

My auto feels great on my diesel, and I'm a manual guy. Mine has at least 80% torque from 1100-4000 RPMs so that may be why. Big ol flat torque curve.

My turbo doesn't really spool til around 2000rpm and then it pulls nicely to 4500 and runs out of steam. Means you have to be ready to downshift if you need to speed up quickly. Is yours a newer diesel? 80% torque from 1100rpm sounds pretty good.

Gonna wait and see on this first gen diesel effort from GM. If it's cheaper to fix/maintenance than a TDI I'm sold.

Mine is a biturbo straight six. Little turbo spools at 1,100 RPM then it switches over to the big one which takes it all the way to redline ( about 6000 rpm). Pulls harder on the freeway than my WRX. BMW 335d. It's a 2011, and is now discontinued. I think BMW only sells twin scroll turbo four banger diesels in the US now.

Just realised you replied to my previous post about diesels. That car must be a complete torque monster, I'll have to try one some day. I have a strange obsession with diesels.

Yeah, it's a beast. 425 lb.-ft. of torque. With TC off in sport mode it lights up the rear tires.
